Mast Plate

The Mast Plate goes under the tabernackle and provides a mounting point for turning blocks and related hardware. It is a great convenience over attaching eye pads to the deck. Notice that I fabricated a 3/4" shim to raise the mast slightly. This resulted in more 'adjustment' to the rigging, and allowed me to give the rig a bit of mast rake. Previously, the boat had no mast rake at all and considerable leeward helm.

On older boats the rigging (shrouds/stays) tends to stretch out a fraction of an inch, giving too much play in the rigging. Previously, I could not properly adjust the rig because I needed to bottom out both forestay and backstay turnbuckles just to get adequate tension on the rig. Raising the entire mast by 3/4" (via the shim) has the net effect of shortening all the stays by a similar amount. Now, everything is O.K. !
