There are many, many manufacturers of power boats, which leads to brand saturation (at least for me). With so many kinds of boats to choose from, I figured that I should narrow the field down a bit. Since I am looking at older boats based on my price range, I wanted to stay with the better/best made boats, and avoid the "fair-midland" kind of boats. The deterioration factor of motor boats would generally make the "Fair-OK" brands maintenance nightmares in their older age. Based on my general brand awareness and some research, I segregated the field (IMHO) as follows.
General Category | Boats Brands |
Better - Best | Cobalt, Formula, Tiara/Slickcraft, Chris Craft, Baja, Wellcraft, Boston Whaler |
OK - Good | Crownline, Chaparral, Sea Ray, Regal, Reinell, Larson, Mariah, Maxum, Rinker, Four Winns, Campion, Cruisers, Sea Swirl, Donzi, Sting Ray |
Fair - OK | Caravelle, Celebrity, Century, Monterey, Glastron, Bayliner, Thompson |
I also looked at the style of boat that these companies made during the late 1980 - early 1990 era and focused on those that made what is known as a "Sport Boat". This style of boat generally offers a large cockpit, generous seating, a cuddy cabin and a swim platform. I narrowed the field down to the boats listed below.
I began gathering some listing information of these boats in the 22-25 foot range.
